Orthodontic treatment brings many benefits, but it also requires extra attention to oral hygiene. Brackets, wires, fixed appliances or clear aligners create additional areas where food particles and bacteria can accumulate, which is why proper hygiene is essential for a successful outcome.
Without adequate hygiene, the risk of tooth decay, gum inflammation and permanent enamel damage increases during orthodontic treatment.
Why Is Oral Hygiene So Important During Treatment?
Inadequate cleaning can lead to plaque buildup around brackets and along the gumline. Over time, this may cause:
- white spot lesions on teeth
- cavities
- gingivitis and periodontal problems
- bad breath
Effective oral hygiene helps ensure that, once the braces are removed, your teeth are healthy and look their best. Because gum and tooth health is extremely important throughout orthodontic treatment, each of our patients receives an oral hygiene kit at the start of therapy, along with detailed, individualized instructions on how to use it.
Basic Rules of Oral Hygiene
Teeth should be brushed at least two to three times a day, ideally after every meal. Use a soft toothbrush and an appropriate toothpaste. Brushing should be thorough but gentle, with special focus on the area around brackets and along the gumline.
In addition to a standard toothbrush, interdental brushes are very important. They help clean hard-to-reach areas between teeth, between the wire and the tooth surface.
Additional Tools for Better Hygiene
For complete hygiene, we recommend:
- interdental brushes in different sizes
- orthodontic floss or floss threaders
- oral irrigators (water flossers)
- antiseptic mouth rinses
These tools help remove bacteria and food debris that cannot be fully eliminated by brushing alone.
Oral Hygiene During Invisalign Treatment
With Invisalign treatment, oral hygiene is generally easier because aligners are removed before eating and brushing. Teeth should be cleaned before putting aligners back in, and aligners themselves should be cleaned regularly according to your orthodontist’s instructions.
Regular aligner cleaning helps prevent bacterial buildup and unpleasant odors.
The Role of Regular Check-Ups
Regular dental and orthodontic check-ups are essential for monitoring gum and tooth health during treatment. During visits, potential issues can be detected early and more serious complications can be prevented.
Oral Hygiene as Part of Successful Treatment
The success of orthodontic treatment depends on good cooperation and communication between the orthodontist and the patient (and parents of underage patients). Proper oral hygiene affects not only dental health, but also the longevity and quality of orthodontic results.
